Charles W. (“Chuck”) Thomas, M.D. ’73, DMS ’79, a beloved member of the Dartmouth family, is remembered for his high energy a= nd wonderful smile, his lifelong dedication to Dartmouth and Dartmouth athleti= cs, and his exceptional career as a physician. <= /span> A number of his close friends invite you to share in a special tribute to h= im.

At Dartmouth, Chuck was a starting half= back on Dartmouth’s Ivy League Championship teams of 1970, 1971 and 1972.  His 78-yard touchdown run against Holy Cross in 1972 is among the longest in the College’s football history.  Also in 1972, he was awarded the Manners Makyth Man Award in a vote by his teammates.  This Award is presented annually to the Football team memb= er “who has best conducted himself to the advantage of the College.”  In addition, he was a member of the Baseball team for three years, a brother at Beta Theta Pi, a member of Sphinx, a member of the Green Key Society, and a Rufus Choate Scholar.  He spent a summer as a Tucker Foundation intern in Oa= kland, California.  Following graduation and before he attended Dartmouth Medical School, he served as an Assistant Director of Admissions at Dartmouth for a year and spent a second year as a medic at an inner-city hospital in Philadelphia while taking cour= ses at Temple University.  After graduation from Dartmouth Medical School in 1979, Chu= ck spent most of his career specializing in the practice of emergency medicine.  Together with Terri, his wife, and her children, Richard and Janice, he shared a loving and active life.

Chuck passed away, unexpectedly and tragically, on May 10, 2007.  At the time of his passing, he was Chief Operating Officer of Emergency Care Physician Services (“ECPS”), which provides high-quality emerge= ncy medical care to underserved patients at two inner-city hospitals in Chicago (including the Norwegian American Hospital, where he was Chairman of the Emergency Medicine Department).  In a tribute to Chuck, Seth Guterman, President of ECPS and Chuck’s partner there, wrote: “Dr. Thomas was one of the finest and most experienced emergency medicine physicians that ever walked this earth… [He] provi= ded medical care to patients most in need during a life cut short by unpredicta= ble and uncommon events.”  Chuck was revered by everyone whose lives= he touched.

A small group of his close friends has begun the necessary planning and = is hard at work to establish a fund in Chuck's name at Dartmouth College to ho= nor the memory and life's work of this remarkable teammate, friend, brother and colleague.  But it will take many more friends of Chuck to make this appropriate legacy a reality.  We need to raise at least $250,000 unde= r Dartmouth’s guidelines in order to name this fund after Chuck.  After careful consideration of the potential needs which the fund will serve and with ear= ly and generous support already pledged, we have set our initial goal at $500,000.

We intend that the income from the fund be used to create internships an= d/or scholarships in Chuck’s name for Dartmouth Football team members who = are Pre-Med majors and who plan to attend medical school.  We have the full support of the Football program in this effort.  We will insure that t= he selection process includes criteria which emphasize the integrity, compassi= on and generosity of the candidates as testimony to those traits in Chuck.&nbs= p; We believe that our support for two of the things most important to Chuck in his life--Dartmouth College and the med= ical profession--would please him very much.

If you would like to make a gift to Dartmouth in Chuck’s memory, please make your check payable to Dartmouth Col= lege and send it to:
